Linda was supposed to go to her family Christmas gathering today. She had hoped to head out early this morning but early on it wasn't clear how good the roads would be. When she did decide that she would go I went out and started clearing the snow from around the car so she could get it out to go. I thought I'd start it so it could warm up and thaw alot of the ice and snow off of it while I ran the snowblower. Somehow I hit the lock button on the key fob and the keys were locked in the car AND the car was running. Linda called our Good Sam Road Service to see if they covered that and they did. They said it would take two hours for someone to get there, as they were really busy helping emergency vehicles. Well, an hour later "Pop A Lock" arrived and using a little inflatable air bag that he used to open the door about a 1/4 of an inch, he was able insert a long steel rod and then just put the window down. Luckily I had filled the car with gas on the way home from North Bergen so it didn't run out of gas AND the car was toasty warm and all the ice was defrosted when we finally got inside..HA...what a day it was. Linda decided it was too late to start out for Chambersburg...it would take her four hours if she had good roads the whole way and it was already around noon. We've been watching the football games and ran out to get some grocceries. Tomorrow, our other day off, we'll go out and see what sales the stores might be running and just get out for a while. Linda spent a bunch of time on the phone this afternoon with one of our tenants that had trouble with the Mini U truck today so it's best if we just leave the rig for a while so the assistant manager will have to take care of things herself instead of calling us.

Surfacing...
Wow, have the last three days been wild ! We hung out at Linda's brother's house on Sunday which was only about 90 minutes from where we needed to be Monday at mid-day. We needed to go to West Berlin, NJ and be there at 11:30 when corporate would call the current managers, tell them they are fired and then we walk in the door. We got turned around a couple miles from the place so had to get back on track to get to the Mini U site. We had gone down on Sunday to scope out where to park, which was about a 2 minute walk down the street. We parked the rig, called corporate...they called the managers...corporate called us...and then we hoofed it up the street to the store to take over. My stomach was churning as we walked up the road to the entrance. Didn't go too badly at first....the two guys were really upset but realized that we weren't a part of it..just there to take over. They gave us their keys, left and went to their residence behind the store.
Then the fun began....The plan was that we were to park our rig next to the store, where there is a 50 amp connection, water and close access to the rest rooms so we can use our macerator. Not sure how soon after their termination the guys started drinking but by the time the end of day came, they were nasty and not agreeable to moving their car so we could put the rig there. So we spent the night in the parking lot down the street. (As Linda observed as we climbed into bed that night, we had a pet crematory on one side and a dirty book store on the other side....In good company, eh ?) Tuesday didn't go any better and we had an exchange of words after politely asking them upon closing if they could move their car so we could pull in and park. They were well on their way to getting intoxicated again so they got mouthy, we called corporate and corporate told us to drive to the next closest Mini U in Maple Shade and park there. Are we having fun yet ?
Tuesday was a long, long day...we went in early (at 7:30) and didn't get done with work stuff till 8:30 p.m. We were exhausted by the time we set up at the Mini U at Maple Shade. On top of all that, no electric hookup, no water and no close sewer access. I was not happy !! I made up my mind then that we were going to a campground until the guys move out and we can get into the space on site where we were supposed to be. We work too damn hard to not have hot showers (or any shower for that matter), to not have electric to be cool on hot days, etc. These guys are really pissing us off. Corporate wanted us to get unarmed security guards last night but by the time they made this decision it was too late to find anyone that could do it.
On top of all this, we walked in to fire them on the last day of the month when end of month reports are due (biggest paperwork time of whole month)....Penske truck reporting gets done on Wednesdays (did that today) and learn where everything is, do all the verification stuff you have to do when you terminate a manager, etc. Holy Cow !!! Our heads have been spinning the last three days and we've been working our butts off to get our heads above water. And try to remember how to do the Penske rentals that we last did for two days during our training in July. No sweat !! LOL..We haven't known whether to laugh or cry....For our first "termination" assignment, this one has been a humdinger !
We left work tonight, hooked up to the rig at the Maple Shade location and headed out to a campground I had located in Hammonton, NJ....about 15 miles away. We got here and set up about 9:30. We are pooped ! Seems good to be "home" and we have tomorrow off to regroup and relax. Supposed to have off Friday but have alot of Penske rentals going out and one of the assistant managers had asked off this week for both Thur and Friday so we will probably go in for a while. Looking forward to next Tuesday when the guys are supposed to be gone...we'll see. I haven't seen any sign of packing and it wouldn't surprise me if they stick around just to make more of a fuss. With corporate in California, not sure what will happen if they refuse to leave. We are closed on Monday so that will be nice. Linda and I are hoping that by the time we come to work Tuesday morning that they are gone. Keep your fingers crossed for us!

Last Day At Union...
Today was our last day of work at the Union, NJ site. We spent today and yesterday with the new manager;transitioning her to take over the property. We accomplished alot in the one month + one day that we were there. There are over 20 more units rented vs. vacancies and the collections rate has gone up significantly. We are proud of the work we put in and although it seems to the new manager that there is much left to do, much has been done or is in progress for her to finish up. She is off to a good start and we wish her luck.
Tomorrow we will load up and pull out of here. We have to go to another site...not too far away and take over the property on Monday. This is the first time we've had to do a termination so we'll find out how that goes.
We received alot of rain from the tropical storm that traveled up the east coast. This morning, as we drove into work, there were several places where there was water over the road. Thank goodness that Bertha sits so high and has great ground clearance. I could see where many cars might stall out trying to go through standing water. Intermittently, throughout the day it rained. Tomorrow it is supposed to clear up and be nice so it will be a good day to hook up and pull out. On to new adventures....

Relaxing Day Off...

Today we went to Linda's brother's house to enjoy our day off. Although her brother was away on business we had a great day with his wife, Kathie. She took us to their farmer's market where everything comes from south jersey farmers. We got some cukes, eggplant, potatoes, sweet peppers that are really different from what I've ever seen and some tomatoes.

Across the parking lot

Back to work tomorrow but will finish on Saturday...New manager coming tomorrow to start transitioning everything over to her. Got word tonight that they have a new assignment for us so we will probably pull out of here Sunday morning for parts unknown as of right now...We get the details tomorrow. Kind of makes me feel like Mission Impossible...."your assignment, should you decide to accept it, is _______" This tape will self destruct in 30 seconds." Stay tuned for more....

Busy Day...
Wow, it was a busy day at work. We rented seven storage units today...a personal best for Linda and I. A usual amount would be two to three on average so seven is awesome. One guy, that rented from us today, had been in yesterday to look at units and get pricing. When he came in today he said that I had been right about having the cheapest prices and cleanest facility. Linda was in the middle of going over the paperwork with another new tenant so I went out to the dock with him so he could start unloading his items. We got to talking about stuff....he is a musician and I told him that we are full-time RV'ers. Then explained workamping to him (that took several explanations as he didn't quite understand it). I then told him that we were temporary at that location and that bit of info he wasn't pleased at all to learn....he said, "You mean you might not be here the next time I come in". He joked that this detail almost was enough to make him back out but he was kidding. It's neat to create a relationship with our customers and have them happy to see us when they come in. We've tried to get all the stats for this facility up for the new manager so she'll have a good start on her job here. It is looking like Tuesday, at the latest, will be our last day here. We will have one day of overlap with the new manager once she finishes her training. She has previous experience in this business so she may finish her training on Friday which would make Saturday our last day here. Either way you slice it, we have just a few days to go.
In other news, we received, in the mail today, the Winegard Wingman that I ordered for our antennae. It's a little side antennae that snaps on, to supposedly get better reception. I had read about it on the Excel forum so that we'd give it a try. It takes about 2 minutes to install....just snaps on with four plastic rivets that replace the four bumpers on the underside of the antennae. Rescanned for channels on our tuner and SHA-ZAM !! 10 additional stations that we couldn't get before and several of them are the major networks (FOX, CBS) Yippee !! Tonight we're watching Bones...haven't seen that in quite a while. Seems so great to get more major programming than just hispanic channels or TV evangelists. Wow, well worth the $31.95 we paid on E-bay. It gets my thumbs up !!
We are off work tomorrow so thinking we might head down to Linda's brother's house, an hour away, and hang out by the pool....and relax.

The Stars Are Out...
When we got back to the campground Sunday night, after returning from Chambersburg, we started to see some new rigs in the park. A few "Reserved" signs had gone up on the electrical pedestals over on the far side of the park for the PGA this week. I asked Carmen about it when I stopped in the office Sunday night to pay our weekly rent. She said there were 10 rigs arriving that night for the PGA which was being played over at Liberty State Park. We didn't see any signs of a golf course over there but it's a pretty huge area so apparently there is a really nice golf course there if it's worthy of a PGA tournament. The first rig to arrive was a huge Prevost...then another Prevost with a Hummer. Now tonight we see a big bus over there and a Teton and a motorhome advertising Beuna Vista Motorhome Resort. We wonder who is in the really nice rigs ? Which players might be amongst us ? I'm not a huge PGA fan...have seen an LPGA tournament once in my life. It was fun but alot of work to trek all over a golf course to follow your favorite player. Overall the park is quieting down but....now there are signs going up all over the place for "Monacos in Motion". Must be a Monaco rally....sounds like an aerobics class. It says that they will be here from August 30 till September 4 (I think). Always fun to see different rigs pull in. We never know who our neighbor will be from one night to the next. Makes life interesting !
In other news, we keep bettering our time with the macerator. Tonight I left off the elbow on the sewer pipe and just covered it with a bag/rubber band on each end. Took us about 4 minutes to dump the grey tank...
Work is winding down. The new manager started training today and hopefully will come to our facility on Saturday. She has been a manager of self storage facilities for the last eight years so has alot of experience. She has her hands full with the two assistants that we work with. They have quite the "attitudes" and apparently think that the rules and procedures don't apply to them cause they keep ignoring them. We met the new manager last week and clued her in on their shenanigans. She said they were going to shape up in a hurry when she got there or else. Guess if they thought we were hemorrhoids, while supervising them, they might not like the new manager much either. Sucks to be them ! LOL Shouldn't be here much longer. Fine with us....we're ready for a new adventure !

Tidbits....
Lots of stuff to get caught up on at work today after being off for three days. Will work tomorrow and then leave Friday morning to drive up to Chambersburg for Linda's brother's viewing and service. Our employer has been really great with us needing the time off last weekend and then now. We are really new and don't want to mess up our relationship with them but they've told us to take all the time we need to take care of this. Great company!
Tonight we used the macerator to dump the grey tank. Only took about 3 minutes to empty it out...slick as could be.Took longer to get everything out and to hook it up. One of the most time consuming tasks is undoing the short slinky sewer hose from the Pivot EZ. I think what I'm going do in the future is to leave this slinky off and just rubber band a baggie over each opening so it's easier to undo and hook up the macerator. What was really slick about the whole process was that I bought a hose reel for the garden hose that we use to dump with so all we had to do was unreel the amount needed over to the dump station and the rest was still on the reel. Hook up the short connector hose (that came with the reel) and we were off and running (literally). When the tank was empty, Linda just cranked the reel and wound up the hose...
Last night we got a really bad storm through here. There were a couple of minutes of really high winds (the rig was rocking), pouring rain and a whole lot of lightening. There were four guys in the rig beside us having a cookout and drinking beer at their rig. The storm hit and they were trying to gather all their stuff up in the deluge that hit them and get inside but I'm sure all four were thoroughly soaked. The people, up near the entrance to the campground, who gave me a ride to the auto parts store had a EZ up canopy next to their tent and it didn't fare well in the storm. Steve and his wife came home from their son's place, in the city, to find it in a crumpled up pile against the wooden wall behind them. We came home from work today to see them setting up a nice new unit. She told Linda that they went to Sears and bought an actual eight person tent which should work well for them. This one seems to have vented walls so the high winds may blow through the walls instead of blowing them over. We hope they stay safe and dry. There is a potential for more storms tonight.

Day Off
It's our day to collapse and recover from work, then back to work tomorrow. We're going to work tomorrow so that we can have a three day weekend this coming weekend. My daughter is coming to visit and we'll go do some sightseeing in the city. We haven't had a chance to check anything out in the area yet so it will be nice to tour a little before we leave the area.
This morning I took the trash out to dump it and saw that our neighbor, who has the huge motorhome, was outside tinkering in one of his bays. I saw what looked to be a macerator laying in there and went over to ask him about it. I am getting ready to order a flo-jet macerator today so that we can dump our tanks without needing to hook up, pull out to dump, and then back in again and get settled. We are about 70' from the dump station and a macerator hooks onto your sewer line and using a regular garden hose you can pump the black and gray water a considerable distance to a dump station, a toilet, or a sewer cleanout. Makes it very convenient for dry camping if you have a house nearby or a sewer cleanout. After asking him questions about how his works we wound up talking about NASCAR. (The talk went from the amount of dry camping he does and his need for the macerator to dump long distances while at a race....ahh, now you see how we came round the horn to this new topic). Anyways....turns out he is a small investor in Childress racing. He knows all the drivers...told me all the scuttlebutt on different drivers....and how he's really close to getting sponsorship for Steve Light (not sure of spelling) for a car next year. He told me to keep an eye out for him. This guy has a three man team that tours the country racing go-carts. Not your typical back yard variety but ones that do 130 m.p.h and have no seat belts....wow !! Sounds like an adrenaline rush...It was fun to talk about NASCAR....he said that NASCAR wants to get the sport back to more of the way it used to be...bumping and pushing....hot tempers, etc. The stuff that fans like. Not sure I would agree. Seems there is enough excitement when 43 cars are traveling 180-200 m.p.h. that we don't need tempers flaring and dangerous antics just so the rednecks sitting at home with their PBR can get a kick out of it. We'll see...
Yesterday at work was rough....we arrived to find that both elevators quit working overnight so a guy that was trying to move out, when we were leaving the night before, was still sitting in the dock with all of his stuff there. So...with the elevators not working we had alot of ticked off customers. I had to lead people to the stairwells but that is not conducive to moving anything heavy. All the access doors have keypads and you can only gain entry through a door or elevator that will take you to your floor. I spent the day literally running from one problem to another. When the elevator repair person arrived at 11:30, she got them working just as a huge Mayflower moving truck backed in to unload someone. She keyed one elevator open for them to load the car and that stranded someone on the second floor....they would buzz the office...Linda would page me....I'd have to go up the stairwell and lead the person back to the first floor....Crikey !!! It was a pretty miserable day overall. The guy who was there at 8:00 when we arrived for work....he came back with the truck at 6:15 (we close at 6) so we got out really late last night by the time we did his paperwork. And there was damage on the truck....that's another whole issue.
The week was long...we are tired....today we'll rest a little...do laundry and get ready for another week.

End of Week One at Work...
It's our day off....we are exhausted. It was very busy yesterday, starting with people waiting for us as we arrived for work at 8 a.m. Never stopped from there....people moving in and out all day long. Guess because it was the first of the month that it was transition time. In addition to the day to day stuff, we are still finishing up things to be ready for the owners visit on Tuesday. I've gotten several coats of wax down so far in the restrooms and they are looking much nicer and the dock and crash poles have a fresh coat of paint. We rented a buffer/scrubber from Home Depot and the 1st floor is almost done and looks great. I don't think much more is going to get done before Tuesday as there are other more pressing things to get done relevant to our day to day operations that will take time to get done.
Here at the campground, Sunday seems to be a big turnover day. We arrived here last Sunday afternoon and there were many empty spaces. Many are packing up to leave today so by this afternoon it will probably have the same look as last week. Many of the Rv'ers here are from Quebec. It has been so rainy this week and we feel so sorry for the folks that are in tents. There is a wide mix of camping styles here....very small tents....old pop-ups....camper vans.....5th wheels.....elegant motorhomes. Linda even saw a young lady wrapped up in a blanket sleeping on the ground next to her car the other night. Not sure if she wasn't fit to drive home or what her situation was. I guess it was around mid week that we were absolutely packed. Even up until 10 p.m., when I went to bed, the evening security guard was still helping people get into the few remaining sites. Last night we went to bed to the sound of "thump thump thump" and I walked down to the harbor to see if I could figure out where it was coming from. It wasn't coming from the bar but seemed to be over towards the Statue of Liberty. I could see the sweeping flood lights criss crossing across the sky and hear the music. I asked at the office this morning and Carmen said it was a concert at Liberty State Park. Not a weekly event (thank God as it was very noisy)but something special during the summer.
Not sure what we're going to do today. I asked about getting into the Statue of Liberty and Carmen said she heard they are booked until October (for getting into the Statue itself). We can visit the museum, etc. but wouldn't be able to get up into the statue. Bad storms coming in again today....coming from Pennsylvania way. I know we're gonna get laundry done. May work tomorrow (although should be our day off) so we're sure to be ready for the site visit on Tuesday.

The Job...

Work is going great ! We've been there two days so far and have been really busy trying to get ready for the President's arrival on Tuesday, end of month reports and put things in motion for an auction coming up in September. I've spent the last two days doing some paint touch-ups, changing out light bulbs, renting out new units, cleaning some trash out of a unit so it is available to rent and counting inventory. Linda's been busy in the office with paperwork, phone calls and waiting on customers. Our assistants are great to work with...very helpful and the customers have been really nice. The roads here are horrible....really rough and the traffic is horrendous. The last two days we've had horrible thunderstorms and one hit just as we were leaving work tonight.

It seems so odd to come out of the rig in the evening and to be surrounded by skyscrapers. It's odd to be in a campground in the middle of the city.

Bye Bye Bike....
We got a call this afternoon from the insurance guy that he had gone to look at the bike. I thought he was going to go to see it tomorrow but we got the call this afternoon that he had already been there. He said it's totaled. When he told me, it was another one of those surreal, "punch in the stomach" moments that we've had too many of lately. Linda and I have both been riding motorcycles since we were young (I started at 17) and riding was one of the common interests that brought us together. She had purchased this bike just before I met her and oddly during our first in-person chat, when she asked me what would be my ideal bike, I said a Yamaha V-Star Classic and that is the one she had just purchased. We've put in a lot of great rides on this bike and it's a weird loss for us. We are so thankful that we didn't get injured, trying to get it off the road or that it didn't wreck us as it skidded but we're still sad to lose it. We've taken it all over the country these last two years and dang it, we just put a brand new tire on it three days ago. We don't plan on buying another for a while. We're gonna wait to see where our job takes us and how much time we'd have to ride. If our job takes us to large cities (such as where we are now) we wouldn't get a whole lot of riding in. We'll wait and see what happens....
Tomorrow we start work at the Union, NJ location.
We are excited. We went in this morning to test out the route, driving time in rush hour traffic and pick up our key. It's a busy site and very large (over 900 units). We found out today that the President of the company will be here next Tuesday for a site visit so we have much to do in a short amount of time. Gonna be a busy couple of weeks !

Training Underway...

We have had two days of training so far in Whippany, NJ at the Mini U location here. Boomer made friends with Duke and Lobo right off the bat. They are the black labs of Peggy and Roger, the managers who are training us. We are having a great time and couldn't ask for better training. Very thorough....great personalities and fun to be around. We are loving it ! I find the reports to be very similar to ones I worked with at Penn College and the end of day reconciliation comes very easily to both Linda and I since we've dealt with end of day balancing before at other jobs.

On Monday when we were getting ready to leave Linda's brothers house, we noticed that we had a leak under the rig. It appears to be something to do with the black water tank, as it is not holding any liquids. There wasn't hardly anything in the tank since we just dumped it on Saturday morning. After doing some research and talking to the Excel factory, we have decided to go to the Excel dealer in Virginia the day after we complete our training next week and get it taken care of. We are hoping that they don't need to order a new black tank as it will mean that we'll have to sit and wait 3 days for it to arrive. We're hoping it's something simpler than that so we don't have to stay off the road for too many days. This will be the first time that we've had to use the service contract that we purchased so we'll see if that covers the repairs as I think it is supposed to. We should only have to pay a $50 deductible....we'll see how it goes.
Just three more days here...will keep you posted on how our training goes.

Family Fun

We arrived at Linda's brother's house around 5 p.m. on Saturday. The party was in full swing with all the family there.Boomer was such a good boy. He got lots of luvin' over the weekend from everyone there. He was on surveillance, making sure that none of the kids dropped their food and made a mess....
